Angkor Wat sunrise, Uncharted fun and karaoke bars

For temple photos, see the special album I made - there were just too many to put in a normal post! It's here:

We got up at 4:30am, had a breakfast of cereal bars and met Song at 5:00am. He drove us to Angkor Wat in his tuk-tuk and we were there in plenty of time to watch the sun rise over the magnificent temple.

We then went into full Uncharted mode and did some exploring. For those who don't know, Uncharted is a Playstation game Andy and I both love in which you run about in old temples and shoot bad guys. Also running into walls is a common occurrence. So we were in our element, as you can see:

We were hungry again, and feeling like something a bit local. Coming off the main road and down an alley, we found what we were after, and after walking past a few places offering BBQ crocodile along with several other interesting sounding dishes we settled on a nice Amok fish at a cheap restaurant. We then went back to the hotel and chilled a bit (we did get up an hour before sunrise after all).

After the standard Siam Reap dinner (for us, that's pulled pork baguettes), Song picked us up with his friend and took us to his favourite nightspot; a karaoke bar. Karaoke is huge out here in Asia, people actually go without a sense of irony. A few girls joined us while we were there and it was a good atmosphere. The others were talking in Khmer a fair amount but the beers were flowing so we didn't mind too much. I did make a pretty big faux-pas though: I thought I heard one of the girls say to another "Joe Kinnear", the name of a football manager in England. All too eager to leap into a conversational topic I have some knowledge about, and emboldened by beer, I blurted, "did you just say Joe Kinnear?" Everyone laughed for ages, except Andy and myself. Eventually, when they stopped laughing, they explained to me that 'jy k'near' (phonetically spelt, no idea how to write in Khmer) actually means 'f*** me'. So I had just asked this random girl to.. Well, you know. So that was funny!

After the karaoke bar some of us went to a nightclub called Hip-Hop and had a few more drinks and danced to the good music. Andy and I got a lot of attention for being possibly the only two Gwai-Los (that's white people in Malay) in there, which we obviously hated. Hahaha. Unfortunately we lost Song in all the excitement and he and his friends left without us, leaving us without a ride home. However, every cloud has a silver lining - this situation led to us getting our first moto rides (riding pillion on a motorbike), which was a lot of fun on the nearly empty streets. Finding the hotel was a bit of a challenge, but luckily we knew the general area and after going up and down the highway a couple of times and largely thanks to my newly supercharged sense of direction, I spotted the tiny little side road which leads to the hotel. We tipped our moto drivers, crept past the sleeping security guard and hit the hay.
